[AUDIO] Shoebox Sessions 1 - (Young Brotha Tray)

New project called "Shoebox Session" is in full effect with the release of our first one titled, "Shoebox Sessions #1 - Young Brotha Tray".  Check out the official write from the man behind this new series (Scheme) below:

Here is the first of the Shoebox Sessions Series which we will be releasing randomly in between other projects.

"I came up with the idea one day when Oscar (SRNC Guitarist) and I were working on our live set with Scend at the Shoebox. Oscar was just tuning up his guitar and going through different pieces. I started writing to one of them, and told him to keep going with it. I've always wanted to do something along these lines; one instrument, one voice.  This is how the series as a whole came together. I want this series to be a venting place for me as an artist. A place where I get to talk about what's going on in my daily life, current events and more. I want this to be my scapegoat from all the other projects with deadlines and calendar dates. This series will happen whenever and however.

This series will also be the proper introduction of Matthew Silva from SRNC as an artist and graphic designer. He will be coming up with original art pieces for each cover of the Shoebox Sessions.
With this particular series, I wanted to talk about the Trayvon Martin situation. I've always been fueled to write when certain situations of injustice occur, I just never make it a point to make it so straight forward. The day after the Oscar Grant shooting, I wrote the intro to The Manifesto EP. From the lyrics I penned to the angst in my voice, the whole intro was fueled by the incident. I sometimes feel that too many artist discredit the actual incident by somewhat capitalizing on a current event; but the artist in me also understands that we have the responsibility to be the voice of the people. Some of the greatest music came from a dark place, but it gave a sense of hope and power. I want to give myself that opportunity to make music like that. I'm not going to stop myself from creating just because I feel some artist may be doing it for the wrong reasons, and I don't want to be seen in the same light by others. Yet, who am I to judge from what place other artists art came from? Nobody. So I did what I've always done; followed my instinct and made the music I wanted to create. This is a genuine piece on my behalf. And I hope you receive it as just that.

SXSW 2012 - My Adventures (2 of 2)

So I've come upon the bittersweet last day of SXSW 2012 and man oh man am I beat to shit!  I wanted to recap the 2nd half of my trip to follow up the last post I put up as of Thursday night.

Huge shout outs to Shake and Meca of 2DopeBoyz for hosting an awesome event called The Dopehouse.  It was basically a mixer style event with a ton of different people visiting both Friday and Saturday night.  The music was dope, the people were dope and the vibe that was created was so chill in comparison to the rest of the madness that was happening.  Respect.

After a pretty long Friday night, we got a bit of a late start Saturday and headed into the city in the early evening.  I got to experience my first ever craw fish boil from a place called The Boiling Pot on 6th Street and holy shit it rocked my socks!  So messy and so good!

After a great meal, we headed over to the Red Bull Stage on 7th to catch the mega Chicago homie DJ Big Once perform.  The homie killed it and shut that stage down!  We had to leave and handle some other business and I found out we missed Nas and DJ Premier as the secret guests for the night!  Shit!

After handling that, we headed back over to The Dopehouse to kick it and consume numerous adult beverages.   We dipped and decided to walk around 6th Street one last time before the madness ended.  It was St Patty's day on Saturday and it was a straight shit fest on the strip, lol.  I also got my official Texas BBQ fix at a dope spot called The Blue Ribbon on our way back to the Austin house.

Today (Sunday) we ended our day with an awesome homemade breakfast cooked for us by Martha and headed out to rock our last show at Volstead Lounge on E 7th Street.  On our way to the spot, it was so weird to see 6th Street empty of people and full of cars driving around in comparison to the entire week of madness that occurred.

We arrived and the homie that booked us asked me to spin a set for an hour before our performance.  The spot was low key, the people showed love for my set and we rocked our performance.  It was definitely a perfect way to end our SXSW ventures.

After an amazing week, it's about that time for me to start packing my stuff and getting ready for a 3:30pm flight back to Chi city tomorrow afternoon.  This was my 2nd year performing and generally attending SXSW and I had so much fun!  I made a lot of crucial connections and new friends, I was able to spin my first ever dj sets out here, I got to rock 3 great shows with my brother from another, Scheme, I got to try a ton of amazing food and I got to be part of an unmatched vibe that is, SXSW.  Thank you to Ralph, Martha and Juan for not only allowing us to stay at their house all week, but for going above and beyond to make sure we were well taken care of during our entire stay!  Thank you to the lovely people of Austin, TX for allowing us visitors to take over your city for a week.  It's been another amazing year, but I'm ready to get back to the Shoebox and get to work on everything I have in front of me.  Until next year ATX!  Peace!

SXSW 2012 - My Adventures (1 of 2)

The homie Scheme and I arrived here in Austin, TX for SXSW 2012 on Tuesday and it's been non-stop fun since we landed.  First ad foremost, huge thank you's to Ralph and  Martha for letting us stay with them.  I got a pic of their awesome crib below.  Tuesday and Wednesday we walked around 6th St ("the strip" a.k.a. the heart of the fest), ate a bunch of really great food and heard some really great acts.

One of my homies from back home looked out and got us into the Stones Throw showcase Tuesday evening which was awesome.  I caught this band called The Stepkids from their first song to last and I am a huge fan now!  These dudes not only had an amazing set, but their light and visual show was insane.  Mad props to Stones Throw for an awesome showcase!

After enjoying the first couple of days, it was time for business.  Scheme and I performed at Peckerheads which held an event sponsored by MTV2 & Ruby Hornet.  The show was headlined by Raekwon and the entire bill of artists was dope.  Everyone killed.  I also got to spin a set in the room next to the main stage and I received a lot of love.  Scheme and I had a great set and a lot of people showed us love.  Felt great to get out and kill SXSW like that as our first shows this year.  You can also check out a very brief video of our performance below, show by my homie DJ PC3

After this show we had another performance across the street at The Lodge (no pics) and the people showed us a lot of there as well.  We hit some late night food after more walking and random roaming about throughout the streets.  The fest has been awesome so far, and it's only Friday afternoon.  Tonight is when the real madness begins.  We got one more show for now on Sunday, but Scheme and I are out here doing some major networking and other work to take advantage of our surroundings.  I really wish I had the rest of my SRNC family out here enjoying this with me!  Pinche Scend, signing off....

[AUDIO] DJ Scend Live Mix on The Hip Hop Project (2/18/2012)

It was a great honor to have been called down to spin a guest dj set on the world famous Hip Hop Project radio show here in Chicago, IL.  To anyone out there who's a hip hop fan, you should know that THHP is one of the longest indie hip hop radio shows running out of Chicago.  They've been running over 15 yrs strong and there's a huge history behind their show.

Below you will find the entire DJ mix I did as well as the interview after my set conducted by THHP hosts and resident dj's Eves and Nick Tracy!
